Sayounara!

Dear Friends:

As some of you may or may not know, today is my last day here at LegalZoom.

I just wanted to thank you guys all for making my 2.5 years here as easy, fun and enjoyable as possible. Whether it was playing basketball, softball, card-games, or just plain water-cooler talking, you became a part of my life. It's definitely something I don't and won't take for granted. The number of great friendships I've made in the 956-days-after-date-of-hired might be small but the time spent together is immeasurable. So even if I don't show it when I leave my desk for the last time tonight, you guys will be missed.

Stay Connected:
vietngyn@yahoo.com

I'd appreciate it if you guys can send me your personal email and/or cell phone number to vietngyn@yahoo.com (if I don't have it already). Thank you in advance!

Your friend,
Viet

For the record:
LegalZoom Basketball:

LegalZoom Softball:

*Sayounara means "Goodbye, see you again."

Hopefully, I will see you guys all again. Peace out.

Versus Final Score

May 12th, 2009, 9:00 PM PST @ Mar Vista Rec Cen

The final score was 50-49. We won. Final Score (opponent's team name) actually hit a potential tying three pointer as time expired but the guy's foot was clearly on the line. Sucker shot.

We were actually up by 8-points with a minute left but found a way to almost blow the lead.

Versus Sky Ballin

May 9th, 2009, 1:20 PM PST @ Banning HS

We lost this game by four points. It was a good game to watch because both teams were going at it verbally and physically.

They jumped on us by 17 points. We got it down to one point with 30 seconds left and then my terrible defense gave up a big three pointer that pretty much made it a wrap for us.

LBC Basketball Record: 4-3.

De-Throned

May 6th, 2009, 7:00 PM PST @ LA Fitness Hollywood

LZ's bid for a 6th consecutive title was cut short on Wednesday night.

We just didn't move the ball and too many players showed up. I'm not sure what it was but I didn't care for this game. We lost by 4.

This is a very fitting lost since my days at LZ is coming to an end next week. I will no longer be coordinating this league, not sure if someone will take over my general managing duties. If not, peace out LZ Basketball.

Here is the email from the Commish:

"DOWN GOES FRAZIER! DOWN GOES FRAZIER!" Those are the most famous quotes in boxing spoke by Howard Cosell when Joe Frazier went up against George Foreman. No one could believe the way Smokin Joe was Handled by Big George. As the clock ticked down I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. The 6x defending champs were going down, and with 30 seconds left in the game Brett Hamilton hit a KO 3 to jump the lead to 4 and knock the champs down. As soon as that 3 swished through, I heard those words and saw the eyes of the champs, glassy eyed and sunk. In a back and forth battle Legal Zoom was showing why they were number 1, but LA Suns just played playoff basketball, a tough gritty and determined game.

In the second game we had the Trojans vs. Usual suspects. This game took 3 overtimes to finish! Both sides were banging away, the refs did a great job of just letting you play and let you bang around a little bit. Van Lathen played a great game in the paint, and hit a few big 3's to keep Usual Suspects in the game. But the biggest 3 came from Bobby Edner. Hitting a game tying 3 at the end of regulation. Then it took 3 more times for The Trojans to take control and win this game. Great defense led to easy buckets, a great game played by both teams!

The Final had the LA Suns vs. Trojans. How ironic is it that Trojans lost the Championship the exact same way as last year…a last second tip in by the LA Suns. Final score of 73-71. The dagger that must have went through their hearts. Congratulations on a great season and CONGRATULATIONS to the LA SUNS for playing like Champions in the playoffs and finally getting a Championship after 3 seasons in the league!

The next league will start June 17th. We will have 2 weeks of scrimmages June 3rd and June 10. This will give you 2 weeks to set your roster and pay your fees. If your team wants to play again please let me know, I will get the scrimmage schedules out in a few weeks once the time comes closer.

Thanks!

May 3rd, 2009, 3:20 PM PST @ Banning HS

I didn't go to this game because I went to go play football in San Marino.

I heard we won by 21 points over Long Beach (a very weak team).

Bad Season Ends

May 3rd, 2009, 9:00 AM PST @ Maywood HS

Our Dementor's Basketball season came to a end on Sunday morning with a decent win.

This game was close the whole way when it shouldn't have been. We won, 78-69. I don't know the team we played against but it was a bunch of random black guys.

Again, our defense was terrible.

Dementor's Basketball Record: 2-8. Season over. We didn't make the playoffs, obviously.

A High Scoring Game

May 2nd, 2009, 3:00 PM PST @ Maywood HS

The final score was 117-109. We lost.

I scored at least 27 points but it wasn't enough as we cut the other team's 11-point lead down to 2 but couldnt get any closer. James showed up with 11 minutes left in the 2nd half. We used a random sub to start the game.

I hit 5 threes in a row in the 2nd half to charge the comeback but a couple of my teammates aren't just clutch enough. I'm labeling two of them as soft-players because their defense is pathetic and their rebounding is horrendous haha.

Dementor's Basketball Record: 1-8.

The Bases Loaded Walk

April 30th, 2009, 8:00 PM PST @ Northrup Grunman in Woodland Hills

Email from my manager:

Good Morning Rockets,

What a win this past week! This is the second consecutive win in the last two weeks where we won with an identical score of 12-11. J I don’t recall anything like this. Our bats came to hit last week. We had a rally every inning. Ron hit two timely homeruns to keep things going for us, including the game tying HR in the top of the 7th. Viet’s bases loaded walk to force in the winning run was the key. Our defense made some clutch plays throughout the game. More importantly, James’s pitching and our defense kept them scoreless in the bottom of the 7th to preserve the win. (James struck out the last batter w/ the bases loaded) It was a very good win for us.

Next up will be Diablos. I am confident we can continue our good play and winning streak. Keep up the nice work everyone. The game is on this Thursday @ 8 p.m. If you cannot make it, please advise.

Thank you.
Mike

Gamenotes: A crazy thing did happen in the 2nd inning when our pitcher was trying to score from 2nd on a single and completely ran over the catcher (a small asian chick) from the other team. James was called out but he put a solid lickin on that poor catcher.

Health Net-Loss

April 16th, 2009, 6:30 PM PST @ Northrup Grunman in Woodland Hills

We cruised to an easy win last over Health Net. I believe the final score was 21-2. Mike Chan batted me in the leadoff spot for the first time (apparently I impressed him enough last week with 2 hit and a couple ribi's including a hustle-triple).

Too bad in my first at-bat I only took one ball and then swung at the second pitch that was clearly out of the zone and hit a weak grounder for an out. I did crush the ball in my next 3 at-bats including a left-handed at-bat. 3 for 4 with a couple more RBI's and runs scored.

That pitcher was weak though so we'll see how it goes next time out.

Payback

April 15th, 2009, 7:00 PM PST @ LA Fitness Hollywood

I didn't show up to the first outing when we played the Trojans. I got a text from Kev that night telling me that we lost...by 20. It's our only lost of the season. I'm not saying that I would of made a difference but three guys that did show up to that game were not there last night (John, Marlon, & Miles).

Either way, that wasn't good.

Round two was a different story. We beat the Trojans last night by eight points and were up pretty much all of the 2nd half between 8 and 11 points. They did cut the lead down to 4 points but never got closer than that.

I think the final score was 84-76.

Finally

April 14th, 2009, 7:00 PM PST @ Mar Vista Rec Cen

I finally had a good game at the Mar Vista Rec Cen. Actually, my first game was pretty good but the last 2 were pretty bad including last week's in which I thought it was one of my worst games ever. Good thing my teammates are pretty solid and they made up for my suckiness.

It was my turn in this game versus VIPs.

For some reason we just didn't play well all game and there was a point in the game that all our buckets were just coming off me making breakaway layups and slashing after a quick pump fake for easy points in the paint (I'm just too fast for the defense to rotate over).

As for some notable moments..Jesse hit a big three with about 5 minutes left to tie the game. Frank hit two free throws in overtime right after they stole the tip and got an and-1 to go up 3. We got a stop and then I got one of my layups to put us up 3. After they scored to cut it to 1, Brett hit a baseline jumper to put us up 3 and they missed a couple 3's after that and Kev iced the game with a couple free throws.

We won by 5 points in overtime. I think the final score was something like 59-54.

We lost by 3 points to this team called Zoom. I played pretty well in this game except we didn't really play any defense. We were down by 9 at halftime and led by 7 after three quarters.

We were down by 3 points with 11 seconds and had 3 cracks at tying it with me missing the final shot as time expired. It was a wide-open shot, after James tapped out a missed 3-pointer that went straight into my hands. I'm not sure how I missed this shot but I just missed it. Good game us.

Ouch

April 9th, 2009, 6:30 PM PST @ Northrup Grunman in Woodland Hills

We got off to a solid start for our softball team in the valley. We used a 9-run 4th inning to beat No Fear fairly easily.

I played right field for the first 2 innings, dropping one fly ball on a tough looper. I then replaced the injured shortstop and played there for the rest of the game.

As for the bat, 2 for 3 with a couple RBI's and runs scored. Not bad for a couple months layoff.

Rockets Softball Record: 1-0

Gamenote: There was a play in the 5th inning that kinda sucked for this white chick on the other team where our left fielder gunned the ball home trying to throw her out and the ball just zipped straight for her ankle (I heard a nice pop and thought it had just hit her shoe - unfortunately it didn't). She ended up scoring but was down and out and done for. I checked her out after the inning ended and there was a nice softball mark on her ankle-ball. She was pretty cool about it and definitely a true trooper as she came out and high-fived everyone on our team on a good game (traditional softball gesture after the game) on one leg. I told her that mark definitely makes her leg look a lot more sexier and she laughed. FYI, I didn't get the number. Nonetheless, props to this chick.

I jumped on to a new team with Kevin, Frank, and Fredde last night. Our first game was a success: a 20-point victory over a all-black team that was pretty weak.

Dementors' Fourth Game

March 6th, 2009, 8:00 PM PST @ Maywood HS

I missed this game because I was balling at UCLA. I didn't feel like sitting around after work for a couple hours when I get more exercise playing pickup. I'm not sure of the result.

I've been missing a lot of games. I can't help it, I've been tied down with things and feeling beat.

Updated: The game resulted in another loss and Manny said he suffered broken ribs from those hackers.

Dementors' Second Game

February 22nd, 2009, 12:00 PM PST @ Maywood HS

We lost to the Underdog by 3 points, 96-93. We opened up this game on fire (I hit two quick early 3's to put us up 8-2 before the seats were even warm). The lead went up to 18 early on and then Manny came in (for me - cause I'm still taking it light for the time-being) and things started to unravel. They chopped the lead down to 5 at halftime.

In the second half, we just never got it going until it was too late. They went up 17 within the first 10 minutes and we used the last 10 minutes to come back. We were able to cut it down to 2 with James at the line with 6 seconds left with a chance to tie the game and possibly push it into overtime but James missed the first free throw. Good game.

Record: 0-2.

Blacked Out

February 18th, 2009, 8:00 PM PST @ LA Fitness Hollywood

I'm not sure what happened in this game.

I blacked out about 6 minutes in and left the gym @ halftime. It wasn't cool.

Here's a few details that I do know: The other team started the game with only 4 players and we had 8. Their 5th man showed up at halftime and we won the game.

Possible attributes to blacking out:
1. Stress
2. Fatigue/Tiredness
3. Lack of Sleep
4. Dehydration
5. Hunger
6. Unhealthy Eating Habits
7. Too much exposure to a computer screen with minimal or no breaks.
8. All of the above.

Dementors' First Game

February 8th, 2009, 10:00 AM PST @ Maywood Academy HS

My first game for this new league in Maywood was a lost. I put up 8-points on 3/4 for shooting in the losing effort. I definitely hesitated one too many times on pulling a couple open 3's. I'm not sure why cause I was feeling good too.

We jumped out to a 12-point lead but that lead dwindle away slowly and we lost by like 6 or 8 points or something.

I don't know the team we played because I don't have a schedule and nor do I know our own team name haha.

I'll be sure to find out this information as the season progresses.

Record: 0-1

January 4th, 2009, 7:00 PM PST @ LA Fitness Hollywood

The Killer K attacks again with a 24-point performance as we improve to 3-0. As for me, I've been playing like garbage (averaging 7-points per game).

I'm not sure what's going but I've been sucking in my league games and killing in pickup games at UCLA. Whatever.

Solid Start to Season Six

January 21st, 2009, 7:00 PM PST @ LA Fitness Hollywood

LegalZoom (1-0) started the season off on the right foot last night, edging FLM by a couple points.

We led by 8 to 10 points for most of the game. FLM is a newcomer with a former LZ player and Kev's former roommate.

We only had 3 players to start this game and had to pick up 2 players.

I sent out an email earlier today to the team regarding their attendence..

Fellas,

Here's what I have for the roster:

1. Viet
2. Kevin
3. Frank
4. Ryan
5. Miles

6. Matt
7. John
8. Larry
9. Marlon
10. Edgar

*if you're not listed here, then please ignore the rest of this email*

Let me know what your plans are for the season. You're either in or you're out. I need to know ASAP so I can figure out who to drop. Last night, we only had 3 people show and had to beg the other team to let us pick up two random players just so we can run a game. That's ridiculous.

The Brian's are generous enough to pay for this league and we're all participating at no cost. As of right now, LZ has paid for 10 players (@ $50 per person). Even though I've negotiated a $100 discount to drop it down to $400 total, this is still a lot of money and the company is pretty much paying for all these open slots. And as manager I am responsible for getting the most productive team possible for each registration fee dollar.

So I need to know if you're gonna be committed to playing or not. None of this "I'll show up in a couple weeks," or "Yeah, I'll be there a little late," (and not show up). If you're on the roster, I expect you to respond and not go unnoticed by saying nothing. A no-response is not cool. I shouldn't be chasing each and everyone of you guys down to see if you're coming to the game. You're all responsible adults so be one.

Thank you and have a nice day,
Viet

- Sorry to the rest of you guys who do show up and/or are legitimately excused.

Super Tilt - Last Softball Game of Season

January 20th, 2009, 9:00 PM PST @ Cheviot Hills Park

It was a terrible night.

I went to go play basketball @ UCLA last night and it was one of my better days shooting the ball. I was also grabbing rebounds left and right but somehow I lost all three games I played (all back-t0-back-to-back).

And then I had my softball game @ 9 where I showed up nearly late and was on dead-tilt to start the game. I'm not sure what it was but I was a pretty angry man. I was heated on the mound and it definitely threw me off. I was fighting the demons just trying to throw a strike.

To make matters worst, during my first at-bat, the girl pitcher on the other team threw me a cookie to smash and I swung as hard as I can trying to kill it and the ball spun up in the air straight to the pitcher for an easy out. I wanted to throw the bat threw the fence. Then on my 2nd at-bat, I was so pissed that the score was 15-3 that I batted left-handed and I swung and missed on both pitches. If you thought I was upset after the first at-bat, boy, I wanted to kill somebody after swinging and missing.

So I went 0-for-2 at the plate in the first 3 innings and I gave up a million walks, leading to 15 runs for the Prison Breakers.

I finally realized what an idiot I was after three innings and that I was killing my team with my attitude. I really was ashamed of myself even though I blame it on fatigue and starvation. I didn't eat dinner and I didn't get much sleep the night before nor the entire weekend in Mammoth.

Anyhow, I settled down after the 3rd inning and finished the game fairly well, giving up only 2 runs in the last 3 innings and going 2 for 2 with the bat.

That's it for the season. We finished with the same record as last season at 8-4. There will be no playoffs.

In Need of a New Catcher

January 13th, 2009, 9:00 PM PST @ Cheviot Hills Park

The brothers, Minh and Nam filled in for this game and we lost a good one, 15-11. Our offense stank in this game and MVP Mary Griffith solidified the bottom of the lineup with three strikeouts. She also made some terrible toss-backs to me as catcher. It throws off my rhythm a little but that wasn't the reason why we lost the game. Our defense sucked and we didnt swing the wood well enough.

The only highlight of the game was two bombs from the little brother where he just completely crushed the ball. The outfielders were playing hella deep but he still blasted both pitches.

Bombed By Bombers

January 11th, 2009, 1:15 PM PST @ Banning HS

Our undefeated season went down the drain Sunday afternoon when we played the worst game of the season (first game of the postseason - 2nd round) and got eliminated by the Bombers (5-6). We finished the season at a 10-1 clip.

I didn't really get to shoot in this game, going 2 for 3 from the field. We took a lot of bad shots, turned the ball over one too many times and missed a ton of free throws. In the end, we didn't really deserved to win the game.

We had a one point lead with 20 seconds left but I fouled this guy driving to the basket and he made both free throws.

Our four-man, James had a crack to win it with a baby 5-foot jumper but he clanked it long after dribbling off the last 13 seconds of the game in an iso-1-on-1.

Goodbye perfect season.

Cold Night

January 6th, 2008, 9:00 PM PST @ Penmar Rec Center

This game was a near disaster in all aspects.

First of all, I finished playing basketball at UCLA around 8:30 and received a phone call from Kendy saying that the park was dead with no lights. That reminded me that the location of our softball had been changed. I was notify but I had forgot to relay the message to our team hah. So Kendy is at the park where we usually play (Pan Pacific) and is telling me that half the team is sitting in the dark and wondering what the hell was going on. Must of been fun.

Anyway, we finally got a hold of the directions to the new park and they all carpooled over there. Luckily, for me, Kev, and Freddy, the three of us had just finished playing basketball and the new park wasn't too far from UCLA. Jackpot for us.

After a few mis-directions and wrong-turns, we finally arrived at the park 10 minutes late and the other team was just waiting there with the umpire. Suckers.

As for the game, we lost by one run. I had a terrible 2009 first game, as I struck out badly (batting right-handed, not left-handed). I just never strike out batting right-handed but it happened. The night was cold. The air was tight and the ball wasn't carrying. We had zero minutes to warm-up but that was our bad for showing up late.

Outside of Kev's four solid at-bats (the one out he did make was the hardest crushed ball I've ever seen him hit - too bad the defense was ridiculously deep), the whole lineups' bat was just as cold as the night.

Regular Season Perfected Once More

January 3rd, 2008, 5:30 PM PST @ Banning HS

We had a makeup game this past week versus the Bombers (4-6) and we beat them. Barely. Everybody on our team just about played as bad as they have played all season. Good thing this was still good enough for a 2-point win at the end, where I intentionally fouled the opposing point guard with 3 seconds left coming out of a timeout with us up by only 2 points. The guy had made 6 straight free throws but we had already pre-determined in the timeout that we were gonna foul whoever gets the inbound pass.

The guy goes to the line and clanks the first free throw. The Bombers are out of timeouts so he has to miss the second. He does and we get the rebound. Gametime.
